While our main focus is on reducing child mortality, we are
planning an education project that will be provided to the control villages
in the CHAMPION trial. The interventions are aimed to improve the
educational outcomes and social standing of girls in communities where they
are traditionally treated as second class citizens compared to boys. The
specific measures include an additional daily 90 minutes of training in
reading, writing and mathematics. We will also provide material support,
such as books and uniforms, to the girls in order to help ensure that they can go
to school. After three years we will compare the test scores of girls that
received this support to boys in the same regions, and also to girls and
boys in control regions where no children received such support.
